Royal Mail : Welcome To The London Olympic Games 2012

Royal Mail will issue a special mini-sheet of stamps to coincide with the spectacular opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July.
The sheet of four stamps features a quartet of Olympic sports: Diving, Fencing, Athletics and Cycling 'merged' with four iconic London landmarks: Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, the Olympic Stadium and the London Eye.
To bring out the best of these striking composite images Royal Mail is using one of its widest formats for the mini-sheet which contains two 1st class stamps and two £1.28 stamps.
The two 1st Class stamps feature a fencer's lunge meeting the walkway of Tower Bridge, while runners powering round the curve of a track, 'run' into the Olympic Stadium.
The £1.28 stamps show a diver's arrow-like vertical descent mirroring Tate Modern's imposing 325 foot chimney, while the London Eye's iconic Ferris Wheel becomes the front wheel of an Olympic racing bike.
However, once the drama and excitement of the Opening Ceremony is over and the Olympic Flame is burning bright, it's all about the sport.
Some 10,500 athletes from more than 200 different nations will line up to contest 302 gold medals in a total of 39 disciplines across 26 very diverse sports.
Athletics dominates the gold medal opportunities, with 47 medals, but the Olympics isn't all centered on the Olympic Park, with competitors going for gold at 34 different venues across the UK – another great reason to welcome everyone to the greatest sporting event on the planet.

Canada : 2012 London Olympic Stamps

Rowers are expected to be serious contenders at the 2012 Olympic Games. And the Signals team has captured their power and discipline in Canada’s London 2012 Olympic Games Stamp.
Designed by Kosta and Mike, the stamp features an illustration of a double-scull boat, created by Signals associate, Keith Martin. Kosta says, “We were aiming for a highly stylized, hyper realistic approach to convey the strength and determination of our Olympic athletes.”
The stamp shows a double-scull boat, gliding over a sheet of water that creates its own wake as it moves. The bow of the boat pushes out over the blue edge as if it is crossing the finish line, with an iconic red maple leaf underscoring our Olympic effort. Printed with a seven-colour process, metallic ink was used to enhance the ripples so the water seems to move as light plays across the surface of the stamp.
Canada Post will issue the stamp on June 27th, 2012 in First Day Cover, postcard and booklet formats.

Olympic Stamps To Mark GB Gold Medal Heroes

Stamps honoring the achievement of every British gold medal winner at this summer's London Olympics will be available from lunchtime the next day, Royal Mail has announced.
It will be the first time a host country has used action shots for gold medal stamps and issued them immediately during the Games - and it is the first time Royal Mail has ever issued next-day stamps.
They will be a special way for people across the country to celebrate Team GB's gold medal wins and help mark their amazing achievement.
Moya Greene, Royal Mail chief executive
Wherever possible, the design will feature pictures of the relevant Team GB athlete or team from their final.
However, a photograph from a previous heat or the medal being presented on the podium may also be used.
Moya Greene, Royal Mail chief executive, said: "Our gold medal stamps will be unique souvenirs of the Games, marking the great achievements of our talented athletes.
"They will be a special way for people across the country to celebrate Team GB's gold medal wins and help mark their amazing achievement."

The stamps will be on sale by lunchtime the next day at 500 selected Post Offices across the UK. They will then be distributed three times during the Games to a further 4,500 Post Offices.
Royal Mail issued its first Olympic Games stamps in 1948, with four stamps bearing the five Olympic rings.

Olympic stamps were not issued to mark the 1908 London Games because back then stamps only bore images of the reigning monarch.

Appeal to Indians

Appeal to Indians
It is unfortunate that India Post has not yet announced stamps to commemorate London 2012 Olympics. The philatelic community is still in doubt whether any stamp will be issued by India Post to mark this biggest sports event.
India has also been issuing stamps on many such occasion from 1968 Olympic onwards. This act of India Post has been highly appreciated by the philatelic fraternity world over and the stamps and other postal stuffs issued / released have made an impact. Many big sports persons have been honored.
In case India Post has not yet thought of this, it must act immediately to keep its and our head high. It must think that this is the right time to honor our Olympians in front of the world as stamps are considered as ambassador of any country. Moreover, we will be honoring our sports personalities.
Let me remind the think tank of India post will come out with a strange but beautiful set of stamps to mark this occasion along with other related philatelic materials.
As an Olympic philatelist I requested to join hands and make all possible efforts to pursue India Post for a beautiful set of stamps to mark OLYMPICS 2012.
I kindly request all Indians to join hands
With Olympic Regards

Appeal to Indian Philatelists : campaign for the issue of commemorative stamps on Olympics 2012 !!

COMMEMORATING LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC

- Naresh Agarwal

image I recently read an appeal in Rainbow stamp club bulletin asking to start campaigning for issuance of postal stamps by India Post on occasion of London Olympics, the biggest sport event held every four years to see the best sport personalities of the world in action. The appeal reads as under :

“It is unfortunate that India Post has not yet announced stamps to commemorate London 2012 Olympics. The philatelic community is still in doubt whether any stamp will be issued by India Post to mark this biggest sports event. So all Indian philatelists are requested to join hands and make all possible efforts to pursue India Post for a beautiful set of stamps to mark OLYMPICS 2012. WE all must start a campaign for the issue of commemorative stamps on Olympics 2012 !!”

Participation by any nation in such a great sports event is a matter of pride and honor. Further winning any medal in this event is like a dream come true. For me even participation in Olympic gives you a title of Olympian which is a very big and rich achievement.

We have seen postal authorities of most of the countries are issuing postal stamps to celebrate on this occasion. Australia for example is issuing three commemorative stamps titling “The Road to London” to honor its Olympians and also will be issuing stamps instantly for their Gold medal winners in London Olympics. Such is the enthusiasm. Israel has planned to issue a set of 6 stamps. This shows how seriously and strongly one is connected and concerned. This connectivity acts as a motivational stuff for the participants and also for the new upcoming athletes and sports persons.

India has also been issuing stamps on many such occasion. This act of India Post has been highly appreciated by the philatelic fraternity world over and the stamps and other postal stuffs issued / released have made an impact. Many big sports persons have been honored.

Though only a few days are left, India Post has not yet declared the stamps to be issued on this occasion by it but it is believed that very nice stamps have already been designed to honor the medal winners of India in the past Olympics games. But it is not understood why such games are being played by India Post before the official start of the Olympic games. This is a serious matter and demand of the people of this state who look forward for release of good postal material including postal stamps to mark, celebrate and commemorate this event.

One must not forget that India Post has been very kind and liberal in its stamp issue policy where even a very good number of people and events of regional stature have been honored and commemorated. Olympics has a global stature and one can think what India Post must have in its store for this event. Otherwise also when whole world is doing great work to mark the event… India post, one of the biggest postal organizations can never sit behind and is expected to come out with some wonderful postal material.

In case India Post has not yet thought of this, it must act immediately to keep its and our head high. It must think that this is the right time to honor our athletes and Olympians in front of the world as stamps are considered as ambassador of any country. More over, we will be honoring our sports personalities not the British or other nationals.

Let me remind the think tank of India post that it has a big wing to promote philately and also has a philatelic advisory committee too to think on the importance of any such occasion and to decide on issuance of stamps and postal material which could commemorate such event and also help promotion and development of this hobby for which such wing has been formed. I would like to inform that there is a big group / chapter of philatelists who collect and enjoy the Olympic related stamps and other material. In India, only there is a big team of such philatelists who are hard core Olympic Stamp collectors.

I hope and have firm belief that India Post will come out with a strange but beautiful set of stamps to mark this occasion along with other related philatelic materials.

Australia : 2012 London Olympic Stamps

Australia Post's Road to London Stamps Unveiled :

The Road to London 60 cent stamp features several iconic London landmarks and pays tribute to the hard work and dedication of our Australian athletes by featuring the official logo of the Australian Olympic Team.
Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour said, "This stamp issue celebrates the journey of our Australian Olympic Team with their strong discipline, commitment, and rigorous training and competitive spirit that has made Australia one of the world's top Olympic competition nations."
Australia Post is very proud to have been a supporter of the Australian Olympic Team since 1996. We wish the team well in their endeavours and look forward to celebrating their achievements throughout the Games."
Stamp designer Jonathon Chong has made the red double-decker bus the focal point of the stamp, which first appeared in London after World War II and has since become synonymous with England's capital.
The distinctive dome of St Paul's Cathedral can be seen on the left of the stamp; a cathedral which is said to embody the spiritual life and heritage of the British. In the centre sits the iconic London Eye, a ferris wheel of enormous proportions. The London Eye is one of the world's largest structures of its kind and is visited by over 3.5 million people each year. Also pictured on the right of the stamp is perhaps London's most identifiable symbol of all, the Clock Tower colloquially referred to as Big Ben.
During the 2012 London Olympic Games, Australia Post will also be releasing the enormously popular Gold Medallist instant stamps. Every Australian athlete and/or team that wins gold in London will have their image from the gold medal podium printed on stamp sheetlets. The sheetlets will be available in participating Australia Post retail outlets around the country within 48 hours of the medal presentation.
In addition to The Road to London stamp issue and Gold Medallist stamps, a set of three sports themed commemorative stamps will be released during August, celebrating a selection of Australia's most popular Olympic sports - swimming, pole vault and rowing.

The “LOSV 2012 in London” stamp is to honour the extremely active Olympic Sports Association formed 20 years ago by amalgamation of the FLSV (Principality of Liechtenstein Sports Association), the LOK (Liechtenstein Olympic Committee) established in 1935 and the SLSH (Liechtenstein Sport Promotion Foundation). As the umbrella organisation now bringing together 44 sports associations and 132 sports clubs in the State of Liechtenstein it supports these organizations with their approximately 15,200 members in their activities and development projects. Two very special high points for the LOSV which come round every four years are the Winter and Summer Olympic Games, for each of which Liechtenstein sportsmen and sportswomen are carefully selected and charged with worthily representing the colours of their homeland. This will be the case this year too, when from 27th July to 12th August this festival of sport, which the whole world is eagerly awaiting, will be held in London and will provide as always breathtaking sporting highlights which will long endure in the spectators’ memory. For designing stamp series associated with the Olympic Games it has become a tradition for Philately Liechtenstein to seek artists living where the actual contests are being held. For the London Olympics it has even been possible to find a Liechtensteiner: Marc Weymann comes from Vaduz and has lived and worked for some 7 years in London as a font developer and designer. He is responsible for the design of the stamps “Swimming” (face value CHF 1.00) and “Tennis” (face value CHF 1.40). These are two Olympic disciplines for which two young Liechtenstein sportswomen were selected in the winter of 2011: Stephanie Vogt in the Tennis and Julia Hassler in the Swimming (400 and 800 metres Freestyle). The duo is to be joined in London by the athlete Marcel Tschopp (Marathon).

The Luxembourg Olympic Committee (COSL) was founded in 1912, the same year as its first participation in the Stockholm Olympic Games. Since then, the COSL has participated in all Summer Olympic Games’ venues (with the exception of the Los Angeles games in 1932). In 1952, in Helsinki, Josy Barthel won the only gold medal in Luxembourg Olympic history by winning the 1500 m in 3:45.2 seconds.
In 1974, a complete restructuring of the Luxembourg Olympic and sporting movement took place: the COSL brought together the Luxembourg sporting federations (61 at the time).
On 28 April 1978, the cabinet recognised the COSL as the central sporting organisation.
During the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville in 1992, Marc Girardelli won two silver medals in the Super G and Giant Slalom.
In 2001, the COSL modified its internal structure, allowing for greater professionalism, without which performances at the highest level would not be possible. Consistent with its mission to promote all levels of sport and sporting practice in Luxembourg, the COSL also supports competitive sports federations and invests in leisure sports and school sports.
The COSL hopes to participate in the London Olympic Games from 27 July to 12 August 2012 with a dozen athletes. It has done everything it can to enable Luxembourg athletes to be properly prepared and achieve good results.
The Olympic Games are the meeting place of some 10,000 athletes selected by 204 Olympic committees around the world.
The variety of events and the great media interest make these games the number one sporting event. The geographic proximity of the 2012 Games will allow numerous supporters to encourage Luxembourg athletes and to enjoy this unique ambiance.
